Lines written by the Late Mary Carberry

The Year 2,000 The year 2,000?

Can anyone tell what's going to be - not really ! so, with much yest, I'll do my best, then we'll just have to wait and see.
Will St. Mary Magdalene still stand on the hill, and once more people queue, her pews to fill ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will Easington Division have a labour M.P. or be won over by SDP ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will summers be all wind and rain ? while winter sunshine does remain
We'll have to wait and see.
Will there be workers, will there be work ? On the land and under the sea ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will Deaf Hill keep its identity. Or become part of Peterlee ?
We'll have to wait and see.

Will Trophy Special be still brewed near, Voted by Whitbread, their very best beer ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will children be able to automatically spell, While adding up their sums as well ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will the Peterlee Times still be delivered free Full of Local news and glee ?
We'll have to wait and see.
The Community Hospital will we ever see, And what will Thorpe's future be ?
We'll have to wait and see.
Will we be living, will we be dead ? That's something that can't be said
We'll have to wait and see.

Mary, my friend wrote these lines in 1987 and already men do not work under the sea at the coastal pits, Thorpe maternity hospital, which later housed old people, is now no more.
She died in 1988.
